5'4 Bonzer

Hello,

Here is a new shape I have been working on.  You can find an earlier incarnation of this board further back in the posts.  The original board was a 5'6 set up as a twin fin.  This newer version is a five fin bonzer with a deep double concave.

This one's number six for Tyler, and number forty-eight over all.

Shaping Bay Update/ 2+1

I've been contemplating removing the floors in my shaping bay for some time now because the excess resin from nearly 50 boards has formed a small mountain range down the center of the bay.  With the help of my buddy Tyler, I cut a six by twelve foot hole in the original plywood floor and removed the bulk of the resin.  I layed down three more sheets of plywood to fill the hole, and voila!, the bay looks almost new again.

Here's what was there before the new floor went in:

I also pulled out some old five gallon drums of resin and a bunch of used acetone that had been gathering dust and cobwebs in the corner.  I estimate that that floor has at least 40 boards worth of resin piled onto it, which made the extra set of hands really important when pulling it out.

The last board to be glassed on the original floor was a 6'2" Wing Swallowtail I made for myself.  I've been inspired by the surfing and shaping of the Fitzgerald clan, as well as by Dave Parmenter for his Widowmaker fin array.  I tried to put all this together into a shortboard which surfs like a singlefin but with a bit more control and drive off the tail.  I've ridden the board several times and can say confidently it paddles well and is fairly fast, but I need more time to see if it truly allows me to surf how I'm trying to surf. 

Here are a few pictures of the board.  I'm using the 2+1 Parrish setup offered by True Ames (7" Center 3.25"Sidebites).  I have a 5.5" Parrish cutaway which I also plan to try to loosen it up if necessary.

El Nino Spear!

This board is an 11'1 paddleboard/surfboard combo.  Made for slopey outer reefs as well as smaller days at the point.  The board features a fairly deep single concave running almost nose to tail, with a beveled rail and vee in the tail.  So far, the owner seems to like it.

Testing out some new and old equipment at first point.  The blue/green board is 10'10" and features a clean displacement hull bottom, streamlined outline, and a flat rocker profile.  Here is how it works on the inside...

 

 

Here's a longer wave through to the inside.  It really makes it through some tiny sections...

 

 

In contrast, the tan glider, which we surfed for the first time this past week, is much more versatile in many ways.  The board features a fuller outline (11' x 24" x 3.25"), a relaxed rocker, and a single to double concave with vee ahead of the fin.  For such a big board, it turns quickly and can be faded into a wave as opposed to the green/blue board which requires more of a point and shoot approach.

New Log

Here are a few pictures of a log I recently shaped for a good friend.  I invested many hours into this board, mostly in glassing and making the fin, but the end product was worth it.  I think the board came out well and I am looking forward to hearing feedback from its new owner.

Long Time, No Post

Hello all,

It has been many months since I have posted anything on my blog.  I have been very busy with a new job and raising my son Jack.   Fortunately, it is now summer and I have some time on my hands to build a few boards for friends and hopefully one or two for myself.  Here are  few shots of boards I finished this spring.

This one is 7'2" and has a very low rocker profile

Quite fast but hard to turn in the pocket.

 

 

8'1" Pintail

I was inspired to create this board after a seeing a pic of a Bing lightweight from the late 60's.  Hull entry to a spiral vee in the tail.  Should be a blast in good waves.
